Kolar Gold Fields
Kolar Gold Fields, located about 20 km from Zion Hills, was once India’s most significant urban developments and ranked the world’s leading centers of gold mining. The now silent mines and the mining town with its historic Gymkhana Club, Asia’s first Electric Sub Station, remnant Cyanide Hills, a 150 year old golf course etc to name a few, offer more than a glimpse of a bygone era of colonialism and mining. Now frozen in time, this quaint town was the first city in South Asia to be electrified is home to several historic landmarks; KGF Gymkhana, once a place of British high living, the first electric sub station in the country, the KGF Hospital – home to the first medical Xray machine in the country, Cyanide hills formed from millions of tons of mining rejects and much more! Zion Hills was earlier called Champion Reef, named after the deepest mine (3230 m deep) in KGF and the second deepest mine in the world.
